Cactus On Mars with the Mark Attebery Ensemble
This CD features music for ballet & modern dance commissioned by California choreographers. Cactus On Mars includes an eclectic array of instruments: classical woodwinds & percussion, bamboo bass flute, Lakota cedar flute, Renaissance flutes, recorders and triple-chambered ocarinas.
Included on the CD is The Emperor and the Nightingale, a ballet based on Hans Christian Andersen's story. An Emperor obsesses over a nightingale’s song then his infatuation with a mechanical bird plunges him into a deathly struggle with the forces symbolized by the two birds. Chinese and western classical instruments battle with modern electronica.
The Mark Attebery Ensemble also performs excerpts from Stan's Retreat for woodwinds, mallet percussion (John Flood), soprano voice (Susannah Martin) and string bass (Hannes Giger). Rounding out the CD of dance commissions is Departure of the Youngsters, a dark soundscape performed on experimental clay wind instruments.
Cactus On Mars is available at or most streaming services (Qobuz, Amazon Music, Spotify, etc…) Thanks for listening!
